The story behind this painting is the journey of an empty nest mother. Everywhere she looks, she sees flickers of beautiful memories that she treasures and continues to strive on in the absence of her children. How she garners the strength to persevere with all their love & encouragement even from afar. There’s so much power, pain & love we endure as a mother that imparts us with a gift of life beyond any descriptive text.

I worked on this with inspiration almost a year ago, many thanks to the amazing people on the ricefield of Ubud, Bali. This was embedded in my memory amidst the magical beauty of being there with the touches of Bali. An artist by passion, I will never forget that fateful day in more ways than one! Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we learn to get stronger & resilient – as the adage goes.

This piece is being exhibited as part of ‘I am a Mother Exhibition’ at Design Orchard, Singapore until mid-June, 2023.

As a mother, I believe we can’t teach who or what we’re not. Sometimes, we may feel or ask ourselves, was/is it ever enough? I know my boys would probably condone that my voice may have disappeared or become part of the background noise and/or music to their ears over the years!! ‘Do this, don’t do that!’ – words I often used when they were young (in laughter today!). This verse is so apt here, ‘If I could say in words, there would be no reason to paint.’

I dedicate this to all the mothers & fathers out there in person or in spirit. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the enduring pains through which our Mothers carried us. Our life is so absorbed that our cognitive capacity is overloaded & we often miss the wood for the trees. The cycle of life is a mere moment of collective memories, I’m sure when we reflect back, the should have, could have, would have become meaningless as life is so fleeting! In celebration of the upcoming Mother’s Day, through my artwork, I celebrate each of you!
